Garden Centre Closure
Due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic and the rise in infection rates in our local area, we have decided to keep our garden centre closed until further notice.
Please read the following statement from our Chairman John Little, explaining the reasons behind our decision.
“At Poplars the health and safety of our staff and customers has always been our number one priority. During the Summer and running up to Christmas we were pleased to be open so that customers could enjoy the health benefits of gardening and then the excitement and anticipation of Christmas with their families. Sadly the upsurge in virus infections made Christmas a much quieter affair than hoped for and we now face a very testing time for the NHS.
The Garden Centre has been closed since Christmas Eve and we now have had to decide if it is safe to reopen next week as planned. The new variant of Covid is clearly much more easily transmitted than the original and January is not a month when gardening is high on anyone’s agenda. So for the safety of staff and customers we have decided that although we are permitted to open as an essential retailer we will not open for customer service before 18th January at the earliest.
The situation remains fast moving and we will keep things under review. Currently we are in Tier 4 but there appears to be a real possibility of a Tier 5 being introduced when we would expect to be forced to close anyway so we cannot promise a reopening date with any degree of certainty.
The firm advice from the authorities is to stay at home if at all possible. Any mixing of people increases the risk of infection. So our Restaurant staff remain furloughed and our shop staff will now join them. We continue to offer support to any of them in difficulty and hope to see everyone safely back at work when the vaccination program gets this dreadful virus under control.
The management team will be busy setting things up for the year to come and on some days will be present on the centre. However they will practice very disciplined social distancing and will not permit any entry to the shop even if the gates are open. So please understand that we are doing this for everyone’s safety and we can’t wait to welcome you back when the situation improves.
