Purple4Polio Grand Tour
The Rotary Purple4Polio Grand Tour
It was a real honour for us to be chosen as the Beds, Bucks & Herts District Checkpoint for the Purple4Polio Grand Tour which took to the roads on Monday 21st May. Vehicles of all shapes and sizes toured the country, raising money & awareness for End Polio Now as well as sharing the story of Rotary along the way. We were also privileged to have an actual iron lung on show as well. No device is more associated with polio than the tank respirator, better known as the iron lung. Physicians who treated people in the acute, early stage of polio saw that many patients were unable to breathe when the virus’s action paralyzed muscle groups in the chest.
For over 30 years, Rotary and its members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world. In 2017 there were only 22 cases in the entire world. Now thanks to Rotary, and the support of their partners WHO, Unicef, CDC and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, there are just three countries still classed as endemic. To finish the job over 2 billion doses of oral polio vaccine have to be administered each and every year in over 60 countries until the world is finally certified polio free.
