The Benefits of Container Gardening

Planting in containers has many benefits.

You can grow a wide range of plants in the same space – even if they require different conditions.

Plants in containers are portable – so if you move house, you can take your garden with you and they are more accessible meaning they are easier to care for.

You can move your plants so you can always see your favourites or bring the ones in season or in flower to the front.

You are in control of the watering – and drainage is rarely a problem. Generally there is less weeding to do as there is a reduced soil area.

Control space invaders! Plants such as bamboo and mint can get out of control in the ground so keep them contained in a pot.

Plants can be brought on indoors or in the greenhouse and only put outside when conditions are right – equally plants can be moved to a more protected environment over winter.

Container gardening can bring plants to areas they would not normally grow – such as balconies, patios, window sills and urban environments.

Containers come in all shapes, sizes and styles, adding an extra dimension to your portable garden.

Remember to take care of your back when lifting – bend your knees, not your back! Large plants in containers can be very heavy. Use pot trolleys, sack trucks and barrows when moving your plants. Ask for help and remember to say thank you. A cup of tea and a slice of cake along with a chat is great for your mental health too!
